Lyons Takes Molten BBL Coach Of The Month Award - Apr 2, 2013

Atiba Lyons
BBL Trophy winning coach Atiba Lyons has scooped the Molten BBL Coach of the month Award for March after guiding One Health Sharks Sheffield to silverware and also securing a BBL Championship play-off spot.

Lyons masterminded a thrilling victory over the high-flying Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders who were favourites to win in front of over 5,000 fans at the Emirates Arena. An MVP performance from BJ Holmes and Sharks' three-point shooting helped them achieve a memorable 71-69 success.

As well as the play-caller overseeing victory in the most important game during March, he also managed to guide his team to their best winning streak of the entire campaign. Sharks amassed an impressive six successive BBL Championship successes during the busiest month of the entire season.

Having opened up the period with a huge BBL Trophy semi-final second leg win against Cheshire Phoenix, Sharks suffered league losses against London Lions and Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders either side of their glorious Trophy win in Glasgow.

But, they then found a hot streak in the league to cement both seventh spot and a play-off place, with six consecutive home wins in the space of just 15 days. All were achieved by a margin of five points or more and three were by double-digits, with Cheshire Phoenix, London Lions, Glasgow Rocks, Worcester Wolves and Marjon Plymouth Raiders (twice) all victims.

Whilst Sharks ended March with a home defeat to second place Newcastle Eagles, that was hardly enough to dilute an excellent month for Lyons and his players, in what has been a real roller-coaster season.
