Magic ready for Trophy return - Sep 20, 2013

Manchester Magic mark their return to the top flight with a National Trophy Group One game against Worthing Thunder at the Amaechi Centre on Saturday evening. Magic withdrew from Division One at the end of the 2010/11 season to concentrate on their Division Three development side, but successive promotions sees them back in the top division, and their roster sees a mixture of returning and new players.
Former Magic junior player Nathan Schall (201-F-90) tried his hand last season with Manchester Giants and Mersey Tigers and has finally come home to the Magic and is expected to make a major impact in Division 1 this season. "After the loss of Daniel Watts, who decided not to come to Manchester, Nathan should give us the strength under the boards which we need," said Magic CEO Joe Forber.
After five years with Reading Rockets, American forward Ryan Lohfink (201-F/C-83, college: Bethel, KS), committed himself very early in the summer and will add some much needed experience to the crop of younger players. Lohfink's enthusiasm for the Magic was evident from the beginning: "I felt I was getting to the age where I needed to take up my education again and the offer to do a Master's Degree at Salford University was too good to turn down. Also, I had heard many good things about the professionalism of the Magic programme and the coach, Paul Middleton," he said.
Franc Garcia Garrido from Spain has just been added to the roster. Garcia Garrido is a point guard and is expected to take some of the responsibility off Tom Ward (pictured) who top-scored last week against Sheffield Sharks in a pre-season friendly.
Forber is enthused about the coming season saying: "The bulk of the squad has come through the junior ranks and we have been able to add some experience to the team to further develop our youngsters. The student-athlete situation with Salford University has started very well and we have long-term plans to expand this as our programme moves forward. We have two post-graduates on scholarship, Tom Ward and Ryan Lohfink, and two undergraduates, Conor Porter and Jordan Green. We will be advertising our 2013/14 Scholarships in early October."
Thunder remain largely unchanged from last season, although American forward Hank Rivers is yet to join up with his team. The south coast club will look to bounce back after last weeks fourth quarter collapse against Reading Rockets, but coach Danny Hildreth admitted he isn't sure what to expect on Saturday night: Manchester are a bit of an unknown but we do know they are going to be well-disciplined he said.
"The next test for us is to see how we're going to perform after travelling for five or six hours as it does take its toll."
Manchester are going to be a good side this season, not here to make up numbers, added Thunders guard Joe Carter (191-G/F)..
We just have to focus on us though and get a result. Itll be a long trip up, but thats no excuse. We will be ready for Manchester and work our hardest to get the win.
Another side who are looking to put a double-digit loss last week behind them are Medway Park Crusaders as they host Bradford Dragons. Both sides missed out on the play-offs last season and will field a mixture of returning players and new recruits. Home court advantage proved to be crucial in last seasons two meetings as the sides split the series.
