Rockets surpise Raiders - Sep 17, 2013

EBL Division One champions Reading Rockets pulled off a pre-season giant-killing act with an 85-84 road victory against Plymouth Raiders on Sunday.
Raiders dismissed coach Gavin Love last week just three weeks before the new season is due to start - and new coaches Jay Marriott (196-F/G-81, college: Monterrey Peninsula) and David Brock were given a baptism of fire against a Rockets side who had finished strongly to defeat Worthing Thunder in their opening National Trophy game the previous day.
An ever first period saw Rocket Louis Sayers (199-SF-92, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) hit a pair of trebles to edge Plymouth ahead but an Ivan Emanuely trey saw the sides level at 22 going into the first break.
With Rockets Head Coach away at an England Tournament together with his assistant Mark Halewood, it was Rockets Director of Coaching Matt Johnson assisted by Ben Fisher that formed the coaching team, but the home side finished the first half strongly with seven straight points to lead 48-44 going into the locker room.
Whatever Johnson said at half-time clearly had the desired effect as his side outscored the hosts 22-11 in the third quarter to take a 66-60 to take to the final period.
Rockets held their nerve and were still ahead by 39.2 seconds left of the game, but a five second violation saw Sayers take advantage to put Plymouth 84- 83 with just 18.6 seconds remaining.
Johnson took a time out and set up the final Rockets play. The ball rotated to the top of the key where Carter fired a treble which spun out for Gabriel Diaz-Morera to grab the board and convert the lay-up.
Josh Wilcher led Rockets with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals, while Danny Carter had 16 points and 7 rebounds.
It was the second tight game for the Raiders over the weekend having sneaked an 86-85 overtime victory against BBL new-boys Birmingham Knights on Saturday evening.

Zalgiris storm to victory - 5 hours ago
Zalgiris won the inaugural Titans Trophy with a 87-61 victory against Twarde Pierniki Torun at the Copper Box on Friday evening. A big attendance at the London venue saw the Lithuanian champions roared on by the majority of the crowd as they dominated the final three period against a short-handed Torun team. The Polish side finished runners-up in their domestic league last season but were without three key players, and despite a good first period Dejan Mihevc's team were unable to match t...   [read more]
