Routledge recalls favourite memory ahead of BBL TV launch - Sep 17, 2013

Terrell
Myers
It's considered one of the greatest moments in BBL history. An enthralling title race between the Manchester Giants and Sheffield Sharks that had gone down to the final possession of the last game of the season.

Good Friday, 2nd April, 1999, and the Manchester Evening News Arena was packed to the rafters as thousands of fans turned up to see the league title decider.

For 39 minutes and 56 seconds, the two teams could not be separated. The title was still on the line.

The Sharks had the ball and a chance to win the game on their great rival's home court. Sheffield coach Chris Finch used up his last timeout to draw up a play for his star guard, Terrell Myers (189-G-74, college: St.Joseph's).

The rest is history.

"They're looking for Myers ... Myers fakes it ... now Myers to win the league ...YES!!!!"

Those were the words of Dan Routledge, who was commentating on the game that day for Sky Sports.

Having done many BBL games in the years since, he considers that title decider the best game he's ever had the privilege to call.

"That is the one, right there, Sheffield and Manchester," said Routledge. "I probably peaked too early in my first season when you get the league title decider in front of a sold-out MEN Arena, and it comes down to the final shot.

"Because of what it was, because of how it was built up and the rivalry and everything, that to me was the highlight and I hope to see another day quite like that.

"The thing that sticks out in my mind more than anything else about the Manchester and Sheffield game were the crowd shots [on the broadcast].

"The two coaches knew each other so well. Chris Finch called the timeout first to draw up a play, [Manchester coach] Nick Nurse let them go out and see what it was that he was about to run, and called a timeout to sort his defence.

"So we had two minutes of just cutting away to people in the crowd and it was that sort of drama, nervous excitement, that sticks with me the longest."

It was his favourite moment, yet Routledge almost missed the game.

"There was something that happened on the M6 that day", he explained. "I had to get off the motorway and I was going up through the country roads. This was in the days before Sat Nav so I was guessing where I was going and I remember being in a bit of a fluster when I finally arrived!"

Fourteen years later on from that memorable day and Dan Routledge is getting ready to commentate on the games for BBL TV when it launches in October.

BBL TV is a new online subscription service which will bring you 30 live BBL games in HD quality during the 2013-14 season, beginning on Sunday 6th October when Glasgow Rocks take on Surrey United.

Games are currently offered for less than 1 per game however this offer expires soon.
