Maccabi's David Blatt Recommended TLV Assistant for GB Coaching Job - Jan 22, 2013

David Blatt
Ahead of its local challenge against Maccabi Rishon LeZion later tonight, Maccabi Tel Aviv's head coach David Blatt (Agency: Beo Basket) filed a letter of recommendation to Great Britain's basketball search committee suggesting his assistant Guy Goodes (Agency: Avi Zilberman) for their national team head coaching position.

Blatt, one of Europe's prolific coaches and elite basketball minds, who managed to resurrect the broken image of Israel's powerhouse organization and reshape its intimidating form, believes Goodes is worthy of filling in for longtime coach Chris Finch, who joined the Houston Rockets' coaching staff.

"Guy (Goodes) and I have worked closely together over the last three years (for Maccabi) and we've had a lot of success and he's been a very big part of it," Blatt told Eurobasket during a sit-down interview in his office at Nokia Arena, adding, " (Goodes) has a keen basketball mind. He's been a head coach for several years, he functions in Maccabi as an associate head coach more than an assistant, and he's a person who I can leave my team in his hands because there will be no fall off."

Goodes, 42, played point guard with duel British and Israeli passports. Yet multiple NBA coaches have also sent in applications for the position, which is set to participate in the upcoming 2013 European Championship games in Slovenia.

Prior to Blatt's remarkable Bronze medal campaign with the Russian national team during the 2012 London Olympics, the Princeton graduate competed against the Brits in a number of pre-Olympic exhibition games, allowing him to become familiar with its personnel.

"I know the British national-team program because we've played against them a number of times this past summer and I had the chance to meet the people on board, so when they made it known to me through their search committee that they were looking for a coach, I recommended Guy Goodes because I strongly believe in him and know what great possibilities he presents as a national team coach," the 53-year-old Massachusetts native said.

Towards the end of 2012, it became apparent that British basketball suffered an overwhelming blow after losing all of its funding from UK Sport in the wake of last summer's Olympics failure. Despite featuring current NBA players Luol Deng (Chicago Bulls) and Joel Freeland (Portland Trail Blazers), the British dropped four of their five Olympic games.

Still, Blatt is certain that the chase for GB's head coaching position is very high.

"National teams are very attractive jobs for coaches and certainly the British national team because of the directions which they're trying to take programs in and the fact that it's a English speaking country which makes the adjusting process easy. I know they are looking at a number of different candidates which is natural -- but from my perspective -- I put Guy out there because I believe he will do a great job."

After a stellar playing career, Goodes' coaching career began in 2004 as an interim coach for Israel's Maccabi Rishon Lezion, who eventually hired him for the remainder of the season and the following one, in which Goodes led the organization to the Israeli league Final Four. He then worked for two seasons as an assistant coach for European power Maccabi Tel Aviv and two seasons as a head coach for Hapoel Jerusalem.

In 2010, Goodes returned to familiar grounds signing a two-year deal with Tel Aviv as an assistant coach. Throughout his time on the sidelines, he earned seven championships and won three state cups.
